9/23/2022 Learning to HealOur bodies have stories to tell, every one of them, and when something is wrong, we know it. Discovering the source of illness, however, isn’t always evident, and the unclear ones are the hardest ones to understand. It turns out that our bodies are very, very intelligent and quite good at compensating, or at hiding the source of illness and storing it to bring out later under situations of stress. What Happened to MeI first learned this because it happened to me and, unfortunately, my story is not unique. There was a time in my life that I was really sick, and I had a really hard time figuring out which direction to go. When I started researching my symptoms, anywhere I turned, whether it be algorithms, research on Dr. Google, or social media, I became more and more confused as to what my own unique body needed. I did, however, see some recurring terms that, in the end, pointed in the right direction, the first of which was Health Coach. A Health Coach does something other than treat the purely physical part of what’s happening in your body. They consider how your sense of well-being contributes to your overall health and implements both principles of encouragement and lifestyle changes to change your direction. In becoming a health coach, I learned a great deal about the body’s nutritional needs and how much they vary from person to person. Simply put, one person’s food can become another’s poison. The second term I kept seeing was Functional Medicine and this was, more than any other, the one that really changed my life. Functional medicine is an approach that emphasizes the root cause of disease. Traditional medicine concentrates so often on symptoms, but the same symptom can have any number of causes, so that doesn’t always take us where we need to go. When I went on to be a certified practitioner of functional medicine, we learned the importance of doing things in the proper order. Today, in my practice, I always begin with health histories. I sit and listen to people's health and lifestyle journey, and the thing that I hear over and over again is just a swirling confusion as to what's right for people and their body. The body is so complex and so intelligent, it’s sometimes hard to know where to begin, so we look at other people’s journeys. Whenever we get into the game of comparison with other people, however, we set ourselves up for failure. There are a million things we can do to help make our bodies healthier. More than any other, the one I hear is that someone tells me that three of their friends have lost 20 pounds on Keto, but that they gained 10. I hear stories like this day in and day out, probably at least twice a day when I'm in the office. It's really important that we don't compare ourselves to anybody else, but that we start with our body and our story and what our body has to tell us today. The trick is to find a delivery system for information that is helpful, non-invasive, and flexible. Fortunately, I have. What I Did About ItPart of the good news is that this is happening because people are starting to want to be empowered in caring for their body. They want answers, they want to be heard, they want to feel better, and they want privacy. For them, and people like them, My Optimizer is a natural first step. You’ll be hearing a lot about My Optimizer (Order Here) in the days to come but, in a nutshell, it’s an at-home hair follicle test that gives a functional medicine practitioner indicators of which body systems are experiencing the greatest stressors. It flags organic systems like hormones, proteins, gut, brain, muscles, or skeletal systems for abnormalities as well as looking for unusual activity patterns as regards viruses, bacteria, mold, heavy metals, minerals or amino acids. When your report comes back, you get to speak to a functional medicine practitioner on our staff so that you fully understand the next step to take, and you haven’t left your house yet! What to ExpectOur aim is to educate, nourish, and prevent. We want to help you understand how your body works together so that you can know what’s going on in it. You will learn about nutrients and sensitivities. You’ll learn about your biggest stressors and how both supplements and lifestyle choices can make a difference big enough to change your life.
This is the most important thing for you to remember: You have the power to heal. Your body already knows how and we’re ready to show you how it can teach you, too. |
